Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope has spoken of the craziness that has occurred after Toon fans hijacked an online poll that resulted in the England man ranked as the top trending player in the UK on Twitter.
It all came due to Newcastle fan account Toon Polls who answered an online poll by Burger King asking ‘what’s better between tomatoes and gherkins.
The account humorously responded to the tweet “Nick Pope” and created a viral trend that saw Easyjet, McDonalds and Amazon all tweet the name of the Magpie’s summer sign.
In an interview in an interview with Sky Sports, the 30-year-old revealed how he came to know about the bizarre situation and how his phone was flooded with notifications.

“It was a strange situation to land in. I had to look at my phone several times before I could stop myself. The Magpies stopper said,
“I thought”What’s going on? What’s going on? My phone didn’t stop vibrating. I’m not used to it, and not many people are.
“A couple of texts were saying, What’s the deal? This is a worry. It was constantly happening, I don’t even know how many. Something I am not used to, and quite funny when I realized what was going on and saw some of the images . Then, the boys started taking the mickey.’
When asked which of his new team-mates who rubbed him the most over his new fame, Pope said that the ribbing was a team effort by the changing room.

Pope joined in the fun himself by tweeting his own name the trending number 10 in the world.
“They were able spread it out and spread it all over the world. Every turn I took there was another. I would do the exact thing if it were one of the other guys.
Pope’s name was the most popular in the UK and was ranked number 10 globally and McDonalds promised a free breakfast to Toon Polls, if the goalkeeper could keep a clean sheet against Brighton the next day, which he did following Newcastle’s goalless draw at The Amex Stadium.
However, he wasn’t the only Nick Pope to attract attention after the poll went viral. Arizona is home to UFO expert Nick Pope was also the recipient of the buzz generated by the tweets and it was not the first time that Nick Pope’s paths have crossed, the Newcastle Nick Pope explained.

“We had a disagreement a few years ago when something happened. I believe that he was being hounded by fans of the opposition football team, and I was able to inform them that it wasn’t him. You never knowwhen I might need some info on UFOs and at least I have contact.’
Pope has settled into life at St James’ Park swiftly, pulling off an impressive string of performances in Newcastle’s first three games.
There are calls for the Toon number 1 to be England’s first goalie of choice. However, he is facing competition from Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson.
