The Kerem Tunnel allows for a the most unique riding and hiking experience.
The Kerem Tunnel is the first bicycle tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was inaugurated as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route around Jerusalem, the capital city.
It links Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban and its northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem, about one kilometer away close to the Kerem junction.
The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was inaugurated during a celebration held on Thursday that was attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.
Jerusalem was once a popular tourist attraction because of its rich history. Elkin stated that, today aside from its historic treasures, it is also home to modern-day travelers. “The launch of the tunnel project is yet another stage in the growth of Jerusalem as an ideal tourism destination for all kinds of tourists throughout Israel as well as around the world.”
Elkin his ministry, which in charge of the project with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry invested thousands of shekels annually in Jerusalem’s tourist development as well as in creating new attractions and ventures that will connect the magnificent historic past with the the future of Jerusalem. I encourage all cyclists to come and take a ride along the new, well-maintained and modern route that takes in the view of Old Jerusalem.
The project was funded by the Elkin’s Ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The work was completed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
Elkin stressed the fact that “The Kerem Tunnel Project is a central tool to realize the vision to transform the concept of transportation throughout Jerusalem.” “The new tunnel that connects to the Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing paths for bicycles and the ones that will be paved within its neighborhoods. The goal is to encourage cycling among its residents and promote the green revolution in transport in Jerusalem.”
The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 to move the main sewers of Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. This plant is located west of Sorek and is still used as an infrastructure tunnel.

Current work includes road construction, installation blowers as well as advanced safety systems to ensure that the tunnel is secure for everyone to use during the entire year.
